Where the Mountain Meets the Moon

by Grace Lin

Hi! Do your parents tell you stories all the time? Well, Minli's dad does. Minli is a Chinese girl whose town is in ruins because of a tale. She goes to see the Man in the Moon who is the only person who can change her fortune. So off on the adventure she goes...

She packs a bag, leaving her parents a note telling them she would be back soon. Minli was walking for a looong time with just a few stops for rest when she saw a dragon. That dragon was tied up and he was shouting, "Help! Somebody, help!" Minli wanted to help the dragon. She looked for her knife and found it. She cut the vines that were holding the dragon. He told her of how he was trying to pass through a place, but the monkeys hadn't let him through because they were too greedy and wanted to keep the peach trees to themselves. They didn't let anyone pass through their trees. Minli made a clever plan to get through the trees: she took some rice and created a sneaky trap to catch the monkeys. Do you think her clever plan will work? Or will they have to wait days and nights endlessly until the monkeys let them through? Well, if it worked, then on they went. If it didn't, then they are trapped until the monkeys let them through...

Will Minli make it to the Never-ending Mountain to see the Old Man in the Moon? Or will she fail? As I always say, read the book to find out!

I recommend this book to people who love stories and think that anything is possible when you listen to a story. But, if you are not that kind of person, you'll think this whole book is foolish and you'll wish you'd never read it. So, if that is you, don't take me wrong, just don't read this book.

A few helpful things I like to say about the books I read:

“Run and Get Mom” (how I describe the scariness factor):
There was one scary part. It involved almost dying in it.

“Yucky-Lovey Stuff” (how I describe the romance factor):
There’s no yucky-loved stuff unless lovey looks count.

I give this book 5 wands.
I have not read any book like it. It is unique, but in a good way!

P.S. It tells short tales throughout the book. One of them is about the Man in the Moon.
